Como cada 24 de enero Los trujillanos honran a su patrona, realizando la tradicional procesión de la Virgen de la Paz. Una conmemoración que data desde el año 1568, y es parte de la tradición religiosa del Estado Trujillo en Venezuela.
Según cuenta la historia de su devoción, a finales de los años 1550 en el cerro llamado Peña de la Virgen, apareció la imagen de la Virgen María a varios vecinos del pueblo de Carmona, con facciones muy relevantes y un gran ánimo de juventud, la joven aparecía caminando por las tardes a comprar velas para su lumbre, y fue en una pulpería donde unos hombres le preguntaron: “¿Por qué anda sola?” y ella les respondería: “Sola no, sino con Dios, el sol y las estrellas”.
En torno a la verdadera historia, hay diversas opiniones. Existe otra versión de su respuesta a aquella pregunta; “Hijos no se les olvide que ando con Dios, mi protector”. Al notar esto, los pueblerinos decidieron seguir los pasos a aquella joven y observaron que se ocultó entre una roca, y de inmediato comenzaron a notar algunos destellos en la peña y descubrirían entonces que no era una mortal que vivía en la comunidad, sino que era la Bienaventurada Virgen María.
En honor a esta virgen, se realizó un monumento en el estado Trujillo y su nombre hace referencia al lugar y a la leyenda de su aparición. En el cerro llamado Peña de la Virgen, se erigió el Monumento a la Virgen de la Paz, una colosal escultura conmemorativa de la Virgen María.
Esta estatua está hecha completamente en concreto y se encuentra a 11 km al suroeste de la ciudad de Trujillo, con 46,72 metros de altura, 16 metros de ancho, 18 de profundidad en la base y unas 1200 toneladas, es la escultura habitable más alta de América, siendo centímetros más alta que la estatua de la Libertad.
