Los astrónomos que utilizan el telescopio espacial Hubble de la Nasa han grabado con todo detalle los últimos momentos de una estrella mientras es engullida por un agujero negro.
Un agujero negro es una región finita del espacio en cuyo interior posee una concentración de masa lo suficientemente elevada como para generar un campo gravitatorio tal, que ninguna partícula –ni siquiera la luz–puede escapar de él.
Estos fenómenos violentos en el espacio se denominan «maremotos». «Existe un equilibrio entre la gravedad del agujero negro, que atrae material estelar, y la radiación, que lo expulsa. En otras palabras, los agujeros negros son comedores desordenados», explica la Nasa.
Los astrónomos están utilizando el Hubble para averiguar qué ocurre cuando una estrella se precipita en el abismo gravitatorio. El Hubble no puede fotografiar de cerca el caos provocado por el evento, pues la estrella se encuentra a casi 300 millones de años-luz de distancia, en el núcleo de la galaxia ESO 583-G004.
Sin embargo, los astrónomos utilizaron la potente sensibilidad ultravioleta del Hubble para estudiar la luz de la estrella triturada, que incluye hidrógeno, carbono y más.
