El 28 de enero de 1821 fue declarado un acto que quedó constituido como la primera gran decisión política tomada autónomamente por el pueblo del Zulia, y fue, “La independencia de la provincia de Maracaibo de España”; como defensa de su identidad e intereses nacionales.
Dada la importancia de esa fecha en la historia zuliana, en 2002 quedó decretado el 28 de enero, como Día de la Zulianidad; desde entonces, la efeméride es celebrada con distintos festejos y actividades culturales, educativas, y políticas en la región, realizándose no sólo el día 28 sino durante toda una semana.
En el año de 1990 como una evocación a esta importante fecha para el Zulia, se organizó un concurso público en busca de la creación de la Bandera del Estado; y es el 28 de enero de 1991 cuando por primera vez, se enarboló la bandera, creada por José Antonio Urdaneta, caracterizada por sus colores azul y negro, y como símbolos un gran sol y el relámpago del Catatumbo, dos iconos naturales que representan al Zulia, por lo que este día especial, se celebra también, la instauración de la bandera de los zulianos.
Durante el desarrollo de los actos conmemorativos del Día de la Zulianidad, El Gobernador del Zulia, impone «el botón de la Zulianidad” a destacadas personalidades del Estado. Las escuelas y liceos en la región, realizan actividades académicas enfocadas en exaltar, las costumbres, tradiciones, gastronomía, folklor, arte, música, y en general toda la riqueza cultura del Zulia y su gente.
